The LGBT+ Service Nottinghamshire was established by The Centre Place in 2016 as an expansion of the LGBT+ support being provided since 2010 through the Worksop Out on Wednesday (W.O.W) young people’s LGBT+ Service.
We provide a range of specialist services for children and young people aged 11-25 who identify as LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and any other sexual orientation or gender identity), or may be questioning this. We also provide training and consultancy services for professionals across the private, public and voluntary sector.
Children, Young People & Families
Weekly 11-16 and 16-25 LGBT+ Groups We offer confidential one-to-one and group support providing specialist services to young people on a weekly basis. Providing a safe and non-judgmental place where children and young people can be themselves, meet new people, make new friends, take part in activities and access specialist support from trained staff on a range of issues including: •Emotional and social support •Coming out •Sexual health advice •Tackling discrimination and hate crime reporting •Information on LGBT+ rights and legislation •Accessing LGBT+ health services •Reporting Hate Crimes and incidents •Support with issues in school and college Additional one-to-one appointments are available outside of these session times. In Education & Youth Settings
One-to-one support: Direct one-to-one interventions can be provided with our specialist LGBT+ Social Workers, which includes an assessment of needs and a programme of work to address and meet these needs over a period of 6-12 weeks. Group sessions: Group sessions can be delivered within educational or other youth settings for children and young people aged from 11 years. Trans*/gender Diverse
Our one-to-one and group sessions offer a safe and supportive space for young trans* and gender diverse people to explore their gender identity, access support and information and meet other young trans*/ gender diverse people. One-to-one sessions are available by appointment only. This service can provide a range of support and information to young trans*and gender diverse people including: •Exploring and understanding gender identities •Emotional and social support •Referrals to the Tavistock and Portman Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) in London - the only clinic in the UK to take patients under 18. •Information on adult Gender Identity Clinic’s •Information on trans aids i.e. binders, packers, gaff pants, breast formers and body shapers •Information on hormone treatments •Information on medical procedures and surgery •Socially transitioning •Deed poll and name changes •Gender dysphoria •Body dysmorphia •Coming out •Transphobia •Reporting Hate Crimes and incidents •Trans rights and legislation •Tackling discrimination •Accessing health services •Support with schools, colleges or employers The support we can provide is not limited to this list, and all support is offered through a person-centred approach, with work tailored to individual needs. *please note: we have used the term ‘trans’ as shorthand for a complex set of identities which includes non-binary, non-gendered and intersex
LGBT+ Counselling
Professional one-to-one and family counselling services are available for young people aged 11-25 identifying as LGBT+ or who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our qualified counsellors will work with young people individually or as part of a family unit, giving them the opportunity to express feelings, explore and understand difficulties as well as help and support to try and find ways of better managing these. Counselling appointments are available at different venues throughout the Bassetlaw area, however we cannot offer counselling sessions within the home. Appointments can be offered at different times and days during the week and limited appointments are available on Saturdays. Please contact us to arrange a referral to the service.
Parents & Carers
Providing a safe space for parents and carers (whose children identify as LGBT+ or are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity) to meet other parents and carers in the same or similar situations and access support and information. The group enables parents/carers to meet and access a range of information or support from qualified and trained staff. The group is open to all parents/carers regardless of the age of their child or children. Professionals
We specialise in providing high-quality training and consultancy for professionals across the private, public and voluntary sector. We have subject matter experts who can assist your organisation in a range of areas including policy and strategy development. Our training and consultancy provides professionals with the opportunity to gain a range of valuable skills and knowledge that will enable them to confidently work with and support LGBT+ service users, customers, learners, employees and colleagues. All packages are delivered by our highly skilled training and consultancy team. This supports professionals and organisations to be up-to-date, meet legal requirements, improve quality and promote diversity and inclusion. We can also provide bespoke training services tailored to meet individual organisational requirements on both a full and half day basis. Young people:
If you are aged 13 or over you can contact us yourself and let us know that you would to access any of our services by making a self-referral. If you are aged under 13 then the referral will need to be made by someone over the age of 18. This could be a family member, other supporting adult or someone from another profession or organisation: for example a Doctor, Support Worker, Teacher, Social Worker or anyone else that is supporting you if you have given them permission to contact us.
